Many people are intimidated by other beliefs and feel that they are not prepared enough to discuss what they believe with someone like a Jehovah's Witness. So on this page we have listed what the Jehovah's Witnesses believe and how the bible refutes that. You may have friends who are Jehovah's Witnesses who are not really familiar with what their religion believes. You may have a great opportunity to share with them what they believe and then what the Bible has to say about it. Remember, it is not what you or I think that is at all important, it is what the Word of God says that matters!
JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES
1) They deny that Christ is
God. They say that He is "a god" not the God.
Truth:
John 1:1 - They add the word 'a' before the last word in this verse so that
Jesus becomes 'a god'. In the original language there is no 'a' there. Point
out John 1:14 as well.
2) They believe that when Jesus
died He was annihilated, His body "dissolved into gas" and God recreated
Him as the angel Michael.
Truth: John 20:19-31 - It was Jesus, not an angel that
appeared. Verse 27 describes the wounds from crucifixion, which would not have
been there if He had been re-created from a gas.
3) They deny that the Holy
Spirit is part of the Godhead and say that He is "the invisible active
force of Almighty God which moved His servants to do His Will".
Truth: The Holy Spirit is not a force, but a person
who has personal attributes and qualities.
a) Romans 8:27 -
He has intellect.
b) Romans 8:26 -
He communicates and interprets.
c) John 16:8 - He
reproves because of sin.
d) Acts 5:9 - He
can be tested.
e) Acts 7:51 - He
can be resisted.
f) Acts 9:31 - He
comforts.
g) John 14:26 -
He teaches.
h) John 15:26 -
He testifies of Christ.
i) Ephesians 4:30
- He can be grieved.
4) They deny the trinity, God
is singular.
Truth: Genesis 1:26 - God (singular) talks to Himself
and refers to Himself as a plural - "us", "our".
Matthew 3:16-17
- All 3 parts of the trinity work together at the same time.
5) They believe that only 144,000
Jehovah Witnesses will be saved.
Truth: John 1:12 - No limit on how many or who can become
a child of God.
2 Peter 3:9 - It's
God's desire that none should perish.
6) They believe that salvation
is not by grace alone, but also by works they must do.
Truth: Ephesians 2:8-9 and Titus 3:5 - Our works accomplish
nothing in getting us saved.
Isaiah 1:6 - What
we and our good works look like to God!
7) They deny the existence
of Hell. When sinners die they simply cease to exist.
Truth: The Bible speaks often of a literal Hell. Here
are just a few:
Revelation 20:11-15;
Mark 9:42-48; Luke 16:23-24; Job 24:19; Matthew 13:42; 25:14, 46
Matthew 16:16-18
- If Hell doesn't exist, then where are the gates of Hell located?
8) They do not believe that
Jesus is literally returning to Earth, it already kind of happened.
Truth: John 14:3 - Jesus is preparing a place for us
and will come and "receive" us.
Acts 1:11 and 1
Thessalonians 4:16-17
9) They do not believe in being
born again or salvation as we do.
Truth: John 3:3 - Being born again is a requirement
of God. (1 Peter 1:23)
1 John 5:10-12 -
If Jesus is dead or annihilated, then how can we have eternal life? According
to 1 John 5:12 we have to have Jesus to have that life.
